Innovative Programs
Fine Arts Program (Drama, Band, Orchestra)
Over the past years the Fine Arts Program, Drama, Band and Orchestra have bridged our feeder schools into their differentiating veins of the arts through developing relationships to guide them to progress and continue studying each form at the high school level. Such programming connections have been done in some of the following ways: summer Band Camp for incoming freshmen and the Children's Theatre Project for middle schoolers. Both of these programs develop substantial relationships with these future MSD students and also solidify the upperclassmen's experience of sharing, growing and nurturing the arts through roles in leadership such as student direction.
Theatre classes serve nearly 300 students in the areas of Technical Theatre, Theatre Production, Acting, Theatre History, Costume, Hair, Makeup and Design class, producing 3 - 5 shows/performances per year. Students are involved with student produced theatre events at the highest level using the most innovative techniques in lighting, sound and production work. Students work has been lauded for South Florida Cappies since 2003 and have been recognized at the highest performance recognition at both District and State level for International Thespian Society. Our Theater instructor is a Tony Award winning Theatre Educator, 2018.
Our Musical Program is home to several hundreds of student musicians who participate in orchestra, guitar, music theory, marching band, jazz band and symphonic band. The Stoneman Douglas instrumental music department has a very comprehensive program that runs year-round. It begins with the marching band, which is encompasses all of the Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion, and color guard members. We compete, and we put together a very high-level show which is cutting edge compared to all of the other schools in the county and state. We were the state champions this year.
When marching band season ends in November, we split up and go into the different disciplines. The Color Guard discipline, Jazz Band, the three different levels of concert band, the Indoor Percussion, and indoor winds disciplines. When these seasons end in April, we begin with next year’s marching band in tandem while we finish up the year with end of year concerts and recitals by all groups. We also do several school and community concerts throughout the year. The Marching Band is set to go to Italy to perform Dec 2026 !
Visual Arts continues to grow student experiences by connecting with middle school students prior to attending MSD through class visits with student examples and portfolio viewings. Students continue to thrive in AP Art Studio (100% passing rate), Ceramics 2D and 3D Art classes. Recent accomplishments include 1st place Orange Bowl Winner, 3rd Place AP Superintendent $1000 winner and 3 Arts for the Future winners $1,000 each.
Our Arts department continues to grow with offerings in Cambridge AICE Art and Drama Classes.
